132 kV Project
Crawley Data Centre
Durkin and Son Project Managed the offsite scheme as Principal Contractor for our client Freedom.
Case Study 1
The construction of a new data centre for Digital Reality, required the provision of a new n-1 132kV dual circuit power connection.
The construction and connection of the new data centre proposed at Manor Royal Crawley, was 4kM from the given point of connection at Three Bridges Grid West Sussex and the associated offsite contestable work, to provide connections with a capacity of 50MVA.
The design from the point of connection for the data centre at Three Bridges Grid (132kV) site at Stephenson Way, Three Bridges, Crawley, specified client requirements for two diverse circuits with the intent of ensuring security of supply.
The twin circuits were designed and installed on two diverse routes between the supplying substation and the new 132kV substation supplying the data centre.
Freedom, the Tier one contractor for the project, appointed Durkin and Sons as the contractor responsible for proving and delivering the offsite cable connection route.
UKPN were the adopting DNO, requiring that the scheme was designed and constructed in accordance with their standards for adoption, including cable construction, approved suppliers and design parameters.

Case Study 2
Durkin and Sons scope
> Principal contractor duties.
> Detailed route design & delay surveys.
> Excavation of urban highways, installation of ducts, backfill and permanent reinstatement.
> Cable pulling design calculations and jointing of all 33kV cables.
> Testing and cold commissioning of laid cables.
> As laid records.
> Traffic management.
> Temporary works.
> HDD Design and deliver.
> Local authority and other stakeholder management.
The scheme comprised a mixture of agricultural land (1.5km) and highways (11.5km) route. The highways sections were very urbanised, requiring close and ongoing liaison with the local authorities and Highways England.
Due to the length and complexity of the route we expected and encountered, several special engineering difficulties (SEDS), that were successfully overcome with close client and stakeholder liaison. These included our proposal for changes to the original route design to ensure delivery was successful through the introduction of directional drilled bores under Monks Brook, a local watercourse.
Close liaison with the local community and other stakeholders, such as emergency services and local businesses, was a vital requirement, resulting in a complimentary letter from one local business.

400kV cable installations
IFA2 Interconnection France Angleterre
IFA 2 is one of a series of interconnection projects to shift energy undertaken jointly by the UK and France. In the case of IFA 2, the route uses a 200km subsea route with a far shorter land section.

Case Study 3
Durkin appointment
> Contractor for all UK Landside off site route sections
> All route proving
> All excavation
> Joint bay construction
> Duct laying
> Cable Laying
> Permanent reinstatement
> Provision of detailed as built cable records
> Provision of NGC authorised/accredited staff
IFA 2
IFA 2 is one of a series of interconnection project to shift energy. Undertaken jointly by UK and France; in the case of IFA 2 the route uses a 200km subsea route with a far shorter land section.
The interlink comprises two separate circuits operating at 400kV routed across the English Channel to make landfall at the Port of Solent Hampshire. Further land and sea sections in the UK require cable schemes to provide connection to National Grid network at Chilling 400kV national grid site Hampshire, via a converter station sited at Daedalus airport.
